I recently stumbled upon a graphic on facebook that depicted the way New Yorkers perceive the rest of the USA and as a New Yorker, I found this graphic to be quite entertaining and even agreed with a lot of its playful banter. So I started to think about NYC’s prominence in world culture and with all consideration to our tastes, arrogance, discrimination, and ignorance, then a bleak question surfaced — is New York self-centered? Do the rest of the places in the USA matter? Does anything exceptionally exciting happen in other states or THE WORLD? A lot of New Yorkers feel our city is more than just the (self-proclaimed) capital of the world. They think it actually is most of the world, and if other people don’t think it is, they clearly should think so. A friend mentioned a cover of New Yorker Magazine from 1976 which alluded to New Yorkers attitudes on the world so I looked up the cover and was astounded by it. It is 2012, and 36 years after its release, I think this is quite accurate. It was drawn by Saul Steinberg in 1976 and depicts the world as seen by New Yorkers from 9th avenue and beyond…to scale of course.
Donna Summer passed away today. By no means do I mean to belittle her influence and anyone’s feelings towards her passing, however, this little text communication with a friend where I attempt to make a light joke was an epic fail. I think it is hilarious and love it when in life attempts to communicate fail so drastically! br > br>
